Crystallography
Rotate FCC, BCC and HCP unit cells. Visualise Miller indices, slip systems, atomic packing factor and lattice defects in fully interactive 3D.
Structure · GeometryMSEVL is an interactive 3D laboratory for Materials Science & Engineering. Rotate crystal lattices, run virtual tensile tests, and explore microstructures — all rendered in real time, directly in your browser, on any device.
Every module targets a concept that is difficult to teach with flat diagrams alone — structures and processes that only make sense once you can rotate, slice and stress them.

Structure · GeometryApply strain to a virtual specimen and watch necking and fracture unfold in real time, synced to a live stress–strain curve.
Tension · HardnessWork through grinding, polishing and etching step by step, then examine the revealed microstructure under a simulated optical microscope.
Microstructure · ImagingDrag a composition and temperature cursor across a binary phase diagram and see the corresponding microstructure evolve live in the 3D viewport.
ThermodynamicsAccelerate atomic diffusion, watch concentration profiles flatten over time, and connect Fick's laws to what you see on screen.
Transport · KineticsProbe dislocation motion and grain-boundary behaviour at the atomic scale, with adjustable temperature and strain rate.
Defects · AtomisticsNo downloads, no GPU-specific installers, no lab booking. MSEVL runs on WebGL and works on laptops, tablets and classroom desktops alike.
Orbit, slice, strain and step through processes in real time. Every change is reflected instantly in the geometry, the data plots and the micrograph.
Capture observations, export results and — for instructors — review class-wide progress from a single dashboard.
We are opening early access to educators, students and institutional partners. Tell us what you teach and we will set up a guided walkthrough.
MSEVL (msevl.com) is an independent project building an open, web-native 3D virtual laboratory for Materials Science and Engineering education. Our goal is simple: make the invisible — atoms, lattices, defects, microstructures — visible, tangible and interactive for every student, regardless of their institution's budget or lab equipment.
To remove the physical, financial and geographical barriers that keep students out of real materials laboratories — by building a rigorous, evidence-based virtual one.
Crystal structures, dislocation motion and fracture are inherently spatial. Flat figures force students to memorise rather than understand; interactive 3D restores spatial intuition.
We build on open web standards — WebGL, HTML5, glTF — so the platform runs anywhere, ages gracefully and never locks an institution into proprietary hardware.
A virtual lab is a teaching tool first and a graphics demo second. These principles govern every module we ship.
Every interaction is designed against a stated learning outcome. If a feature does not improve understanding, it does not ship.
Our scenes are optimised to run on integrated graphics and low-bandwidth connections, so no student is excluded by their device.
MSEVL is designed to prepare students for physical labs and reinforce what they learn there — not to substitute for hands-on experience.
Each module is piloted with learners and instructors before release, and refined using measured learning outcomes and usability data.
WebGL rendering core, lattice visualiser, user accounts and the first pilot with partner institutions.
Real-time tensile testing with live stress–strain plotting, plus a guided grind–polish–etch–observe metallography workflow.
Class rosters, assignment creation, progress analytics and LTI integration with common learning management systems.
Headset support for the most spatially demanding modules, built on the same content pipeline as the browser experience.
Let instructors build and share their own crystal structures, specimens and guided narratives.
We are actively looking for educators, departments and institutions to pilot modules and shape the roadmap.

I am an M.Tech researcher in Materials Science and Engineering at IIT Kanpur, specialising in iron- and steelmaking, with a particular focus on the continuous casting of steel. My research combines high-temperature laboratory experiments, plant-scale trials and physics-based numerical modelling to solve real casting-floor problems.
Working within the group of Prof. Rahul Sarkar, my work spans mould flux design, interfacial phenomena, breakout prevention and inclusion cleanliness. The through-process view — BOF/EAF → ladle → tundish → mould → strand — anchors everything I do.
I completed my B.Tech (Hons) in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at NIT Jamshedpur, followed by an M.Tech in Materials Science and Engineering at IIT Kanpur, where I continue to work on advanced mould flux engineering and high-temperature interfacial science.
From liquid steel to solid strand — quantifying what happens between the ladle and the caster, and turning that understanding into cleaner steel and defect-free cast product.
Development of novel mould fluxes for continuous casting, including viscosity control, crystallisation kinetics and heat transfer optimisation at the mould–strand interface.
Experimental investigation of slag–steel–mould interactions, wettability and infiltration studies at high temperature, linking interfacial behaviour to casting performance.
Measurement and modelling of viscosity, crystallisation and melting behaviour of slags and mould fluxes under conditions relevant to industrial continuous casting.
Investigation of residual stress generation and distortion phenomena during heat treatment of steel castings — studying thermal gradients, phase transformations and section thickness effects.
Pin-on-disc wear testing and SEM/EDX analysis of SiC-reinforced aluminium metal matrix composites, studying reinforcement effects on friction and wear mechanisms.
Physics-based numerical modelling of high-temperature processes, from solidification behaviour to stress evolution, validated against experimental and plant-scale data.
